Sam checked and rechecked his little phone. The laser controls were slaved to an app running through a couple of the old Encom server slices, to a Stark industries server circa 1998 ( which was the best Sam and Tony could do on compatibility ) to, funny enough, an industrial strength robotic arm that had originally been intended to save workers from having to work long hours on hellfire missiles. It's original function now rendered moot twice over, the computer that powered it still had a wholly unforeseen use as Sam had navigated his way through a Stark system from the other side of the screen, and ended up putting it all together once the laser was flown in from LA.

Sure it had taken a while, but it was totally worth it. Sam had been over this entire process so many times, he could recite it backwards and forwards. Hell, he'd been digitized enough, it was a wonder he didn't sneeze pixels. All that was left, this time around, is for JARVIS to step into the Portal with him this time.

Sam still checked his phone a third time.

Tony knew his calculations were good, but he was checking the equipment as much as Sam was checking his phone. All their hard work, and suddenly now was the hour. God, that sounded pretentious.

"Okay. So. Let's do this. JARVIS, you ready?"

Okay, so he was worrying about JARVIS. It wasn't every day that you submitted your first-born child to an experimental bio-technical procedure.

JARVIS was nervous, to say the least. Even if it was only a computer-based line of code and not an actual emotion, the computer program had seen the emotion enough to replicate it. It would be his first time leaving home, the only home that he really knew and belonged in - the computer system.

He watched the portal before him, the teal eyes lit up by the brightness of it. All he had to do was step through with Sam.

Still he at least had contact with Sir, who was waiting just on the other side for him. For both of them. "Honestly, I'm quite afraid, Sir," he admitted and let his hands tighten into fists. "There's no time quite like the present though..."

Sorry for the delay, got caught up in stuff.

Tony bit his lip as JARVIS's voice came out if the speakers. And then the laser was lighting up, and Tony stood back and closed his eyes as the glow reached incandescent.

The glow faded, and Tony slitted his eyes open warily. Through the after-images, he could see Sam and a taller man standing side by side, and he only just thought to check that the laser was definitely done and on standby before stepping forward. "JARVIS?" he breathed, awe on his face as he looked up at his AI made flesh. Looking aside at Sam for a moment, Tony hoped that the naked gratitude on his face was conveying the multitude of thanks Tony wanted to give him for enabling this moment.

No worries of course!

Tingly.

Not what JARVIS was expecting.

He felt the Portal's light rushing around him, pulling and pulling at him until there was no where for him to go but up into it. Eyes closed against the harshness of that light until it died away.

Feet were planted firmly on a hard surface and he could feel Sam shifting next to him. Still wearing the black suit stylized like a catsuit with the teal circuits embedded to it, Jarvis opened his eyes. He was pale and tall, hair covered with fuzzy blonde hair. His eyes were a bright color, the same teal that colored all of Tony's personal electronic devices.

"Sir?" he questioned after a beat, looking around at his surroundings. It felt so strange to be able to look. He couldn't zoom in on anything or scan it, but see it how Sam and Tony saw things. With actual optic nerves registering and sending the pictures to his mind.

His mind.

A deep breath of air was sucked in as he tried to take in everything as the realization hit him. He was seeing, feeling, experiencing everything all in one go. Air was filling his lungs and causing the muscles to expand and contract. His heart was starting to pump blood through the body faster as the adrenaline picked up. His mind was working faster with unanswered questions rapid-firing through it. "Sir- Sir--" He choked out, stumbling backwards as his mind was careening into overload.

Crap.

Tony stepped closer to JARVIS, seeing the familiar signs of panic on his face (his face!), and grateful for Sam's intervention. He reached up, pressing warm fingertips to JARVIS's cheek, giving him something to focus on.

"J, look at me. Concentrate on how my fingers feel. Listen to Sam's voice. That's good. Now, breathe with me." He inhaled deliberately, held it for a second or two, then blew it out slowly. Again and again, creating a pattern for the AI-turned-human to match.

Why hadn't Tony thought of this and prepped for it? Well, J was here now, and they had to work with what they had available.

Jarvis could feel the blood pounding in his chest, in his ears, and he tried to focus on both men speaking to him. What he was feeling was normal. It was okay. Sam was right - the functions he was currently experiencing came with the new body he was inhabiting, and things like breathing, blinking, were absolutely normal. Needed.

He sinks to the touch on his shoulders, moving down to crouch and get stabilized. Too much all in one go and the former AI feels an urge to pull away from the touch Sam is giving him.

In fact, Jarvis twitches in recoil at the feeling of warm fingers to his cheeks. It's so familiar yet unfamiliar all at once. Everything in his mind focused to the feeling of both pairs of hands settled on him, and locked eyes with Tony.

Breathe in, breathe out. Mimic Mr. Stark. He found the pattern easily and slowly both men would feel Jarvis relax under their touches.

"I-I'm sorry. Overload. It was overload," which was something Jarvis had been programmed to avoid at all costs. But how could you avoid it if you had no control over it?

"Sorry, J, I should have thought about it t . . . wait, what?"

For the first time, Tony stops looking at Jarvis' face, taking his fingers away, and examines the outfit he'd arrived in. "Wow, they don't believe in zippers on the Grid, do they? Okay, uh, pocketknife, got it here somewhere . . . ah, there."

On the surface, Tony's pocket knife resembles a mid-range Swiss army knife, with a screwdriver set and mini-saw and file and bottle opener attachments, among others. It also has two blades, a long and a short one.

However, given that Tony had manufactured it himself, it was a little more high-tech under the red and gold outer layers. The blades - in fact, all of the tools - are made of tantalum carbide. Stronger than steel, sharper than broken glass, and probably more than capable of removing whatever the suit was made of.

"J, we're going to have to cut the suit off you. Okay? It might be a bit overwhelming, I'm not sure how much sensory input this thing is blocking, but you're going to need to take it off sooner or later. Are you okay with that?"

Looking from Jarvis to Sam, he adds, "Sam, please tell me you have spare clothes, I don't think mine are going to fit him."

Jarvis looked from Sam to Tony as they talked about the suit and how it was going to have to go. What was wrong with it? It fit fine (perfectly really) and it was the only thing he had. What else would he wear?

A nod. "Will you cease or slow if I ask? I...I don't think it will be terrible, since I can feel the suit I'm wearing right now."

He looks to Sam. "Will the suit not suffice to wear here?" How come Sam didn't have his on when he came back through the Portal? His gaze goes from Sam then to the suit around him. He lifted his arms, marveling in how those were made of real flesh and blood, that there were now muscles to make up for the lack of programming he had. One hand went to his covered wrist, gently pressing two fingers across it.

A pulse. A real pulse there. Those same fingers went up to his neck and felt there. Just like the wrist - he could feel the firm beat of life there, too. "A-a pulse."

The blue eyes widened. "A pulse," he looked between the two of them, with a mixture of awe and excitement on his face. "My own pulse!"

Tony rolled his eyes at Sam, then turned back to Jarvis. "J, I promise I will stop if you ask me to. But we have to get it off you because you have human biology under there now, and it'll get really uncomfortable if you start sweating. Also, you have a human digestive system, and you'll need to pee at some point. Can't do that with the rubber suit in the way." Then Jarvis' exclaimation made him smile fondly. "Yeah, buddy. Your very own pulse. Heart and everything."

He holds up the knife. "I'm using my pocket knife, okay? You helped me make this, I know you know what it is. Stay as still as you can, I'm going to start by slicing the top half open where a jacket zipper would be."

He slowly extends the knife to just under Jarvis' chin, at the top of the suit collar. "Sam, tell Q I'll have Pepper take her shopping on my credit card, just please come back with some clothes before I have to smuggle him naked into the car. Which, granted, would not be the first time I've had naked passengers."

Jarvis let himself breathe out, practicing what he just learned from Tony. Breathe in...hold it... breathe out. He looks to the knife and yes, it's familiar, he knows it. Helped create it with planning and creation of it. Vibranium made instead of general stainless steel that others made.

No, this was a Stark creation and one of a kind.

"I believe that the store 'Big and Tall', sirs, from what I can remember of the store." Not that Tony really needed it, but there was a shop located next to the Men's Wearhouse so the information was there in case.

Once again, another look between the two men before straightening up, putting his arms out, and standing as still as he could manage with his chin up. "I wouldn't want to impose on Miss Quorra--"

"Good plan." He flicked the blade out once again, warning Jarvis where he was going to move. First, he ran a line around the former program's waist, separating the top half from the bottom. Then he sliced it apart following the long line of his arms from neck to wrist. It would be easy enough to get the top off after that.

Re-sheathing the blade, Tony pocketed it and nodded to Sam. "Move your arms out straight behind you, J. Like this, see?" He held his own out in demonstration, arms pointing back on a diagonal towards the floor, elbow joints at 180 degrees, fingers and palms in line with his arms. Essentially, the easiest pose that he could stand in for them to take off the very clingy rubber substitute.

Jarvis gave Sam a look that could have only meant 'of course I was serious about that'. Not amused by the laughter there, Sam. "I protest wearing one of those shirts, Sam. I don't think they're really my fashion type."

From what he had seen of what Sir would wear and various fashion blogs and posts, he was rather fond of the way suits looked. Then there was the semi-casual look with slacks and polos... yes, that look would do nicely.

He held very still as the knife came around with the hint of the cool metal barely noticed as it went. As the suit came free of his body, it was obvious that his time in the computer was spent being active. The form he too was rather honed, probably from the dashes through the Grid to get his various tasks done. It was tough work to keep up with Tony after all!

Jarvis moves to mimic the way Tony's posed, looking a little curious as to what they were going to do. "I trust we will be doing something similar with the suit around my legs as well?"

"Or unless you're a tourist in the big city for the first time and you think it'll make a great souvenir. Terrible decision, trust me."

Tony's knife, against all expectations born of inferior steel, was still sharp. Tantalum carbide vibrainum alloy kicked serious ass. "Yes, J, we're getting the rest off. Sam, please tell me you have a towel or a blanket or something, I don't want Jarvis to freeze in his first hour being human. Or sneeze."

Carefully, Tony peeled the top half of the outfit off so that Jarvis wouldn't be left with the odd feeling of half-destroyed clothes, then knelt to one side of the taller man and opened up his knife again. "J, I'm going to slice a line down where the outside seam on a pair of pants would be, on both legs. They should just fall off after that. Ready?"

Jarvis, of course, was hardly a tourist. He had seen almost as much of the world as Tony had!

He was quite still under both pairs of hands after wiggling out of the top, baring the pale skin for them both to see. With it fully off of him now, it was clear that Jarvis hadn't entirely left his Program-self behind. On his chest there was a mark right over is heart.

A mark in the same shape as the reactor. It was almost tattoo-like, though instead of black ink it was the teal that had a semi-subtle glow to it. Jarvis didn't seem to notice though as Tony moved to kneel and explained what was going on.

His feet moved apart and he chanced a look back at Sam. "You wouldn't happen to have anything in teal or white, would you sir?"

"Seeing. Still working on believing," Tony said, only halfway paying attention to Sam's words. "That's an arc reactor. Or at least the image of one. I wonder how deep it goes?"

It didn't seem to be hurting Jarvis, at least. Tony reached up as if to touch it, hovering his fingertips over skin and sketching it in the air. "Yeah, you're definitely a Stark, J." There was a smile of wonder on his face before he realised that the man standing before him was probably getting cold.

"Sam, got that blanket? I'll order some white and teal ones in for him later."

Jarvis' head snapped around to look right at Tony with those words - familiar words from the attack on New York. There was a surprised look that he remembered it, though no visual in his memory came with it. Strange.

Teal eyes looked down to watch Tony's hands hover and sketch close to his own skin. Goosebumps were forming on his arms as the chill continued to cover his torso since his legs were still covered.

"It is getting a little chill in here, Sir." Those eyes went to Sam, seeming to light up at the blanket. Yes, blanket! Used for warmth and comfort. He would like that, please. With awkward steps as he became accustomed to how gravity felt working against and with the body, he tried to close some of the distance between himself and Sam.

"If I may have it please, s-- Sam?"

Baby's first steps. Tony wondered if all parents felt this combination of proud and anxious, though Jarvis was far more sensible and communicative than he figured a toddler would be.

"Depends. Could be just a surface marking, J did help me build the arc reactors. He'd have had the specs on file. If it's something more . . . well, as long as it's not running on palladium, it's probably not going to kill him."

He'd lasted years with one in his own chest, after all.

"Let's ask the man himself. Jarvis, are you having any difficulty breathing? Does your chest hurt at all?"

Oh, soft. Soft? SOFT. Oh, oh, oh. Jarvis could get accustomed to things feeling like this and he didn't hesitate to wrap it around himself. It wasn't warm, but it was already keeping the chill of his skin.

His fascination with the blanket took him out of the conversation for a few minutes as they discussed the reactor image on his chest, and whether or not it was detrimental to him.

Finally he looked up as Sam asked if it hurt, and then Tony asking pretty much the same thing.

"No, I believe everything is in order. Perhaps we should do a physical to see if it's true?" Jarvis put a hand to his chest, trying to feel what was a human heartbeat underneath it. It was warm, pulsing to continue his existence in this form as he stood there covered in a soft blanket and the remains of his Grid suit on his legs.

Relax, Sam, Tony was picking up the bill for this.

"Easier to do a physical upstairs where the actual medical bay is," Tony said absently. While Sam was upstairs, he divested Jarvis of the remains of his rubber Gridsuit and put his pocket knife away. Standing up and stepping back, he looked Jarvis over, a hint of the pride and wonder of having his AI stand in front of him coming back to his expression.

"You like that blanket? Okay, so soft and warm for clothes. That's - wow, Sam, did she buy out the store?"

Jarvis helps gets the rest of the suit off as best as he can, even letting the blanket drop to get both hands free at some point. Underwear is not a thing in the Grid for programs, but there's no shame from Jarvis since he wasn't molded with those expectations of himself.

That and he had seen Sir enough times through a computer lens as an AI to not really mind nudity.

The blanket is picked back up and held to his chest like a kid with his comforting blanket and regarding Tony with his own awed expression.

Now that the anxiety and panic of being a human had passed, it was... different to see Tony like this, without the aid of a computer's camera. In fact, he leans in close to get a better look... then Tony looks to Sam as the other comes down with bags weighed on both arms.

He straightens up, still holding the blanket, and watches Sam and Tony's interactions about the purchases. "I wish she hadn't - I didn't want to be too much trouble..."

In fact, if one of them had told Jarvis he'd be fine just wrapping the blanket around his waist, he'd probably settle for that. Until he figured out he couldn't do his normal duties with it's interference that is.
